The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has urged Police Public Relations Officers across the country to step up efforts against fake news, warning that it poses a growing threat to public trust and police operations.

 

He made the call at the 2025 Police Public Relations Officers Conference.

Speaking at the event, he highlighted the need for quick debunking of old videos, manipulated images, and misleading narratives that often resurface as current events.

 

He charged police spokespeople to adopt aggressive fact-checking strategies and to respond promptly to misinformation before it spreads widely.

Egbetokun also encouraged PROs to turn social media into a platform for truth, transparency, and stronger community relations, stressing that effective communication is central to modern policing.

 

The conversation around misinformation comes at a time when the police continue to face public frustration over issues such as alleged extortion and ongoing security concerns.
