Nigerian Government has introduced a National Textbook Ranking System for primary, junior and senior secondary schools to improve quality assurance and standardisation. The policy seeks to curb the spread of unsuitable textbooks and ensure only curriculum-compliant materials are approved for classroom use.

The Minister of Education (@NigEducation), Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa @DrTunjiAlausa and Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad @Suwaiba_Said, said the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will retain its statutory role in textbook approval. Approved books will now undergo a national ranking process to identify the most suitable materials for each subject and level.

NERDC will set up Standing Subject Committees of experts to evaluate textbooks against defined academic and pedagogical standards. From September 2026, unranked textbooks will not be permitted for use, as government moves to improve learning outcomes nationwide.
