In recent times, Nigeria has been grappling with a myriad of economic challenges, foremost among them being the alarming rise in the prices of commodities, leading to an unbearable cost of living for the average Nigerian citizen. While politicians often engage in blame games and finger-pointing, it’s time for concrete solutions to be proffered and implemented.

To those politicians who genuinely have the best interests of Nigeria at heart but feel sidelined, it’s imperative to present a roadmap for addressing the economic hardships facing our people. One key strategy is for the government to actively monitor the actual cost of production of commodities and establish a benchmark cost for sales. Violations of this benchmark should incur penalties to deter unscrupulous traders from exploiting consumers.

For instance, Lagos State has set a commendable example with its rent review law, ensuring that the cost of renting accommodations remains reasonable and humane. Other states, like Delta, should follow suit to protect their citizens from exorbitant rents.

Furthermore, the government must not feign helplessness in the face of economic challenges. Instead, it should empower local industries and producers to compete favourably with imported goods. Subsidies, incentives, and infrastructural support can bolster the competitiveness of locally made products, thereby alleviating the burden on consumers.

Addressing insecurity is also paramount to economic stability. Collaborating with local vigilante groups and leveraging technology like drones can enhance security measures, as suggested by Comrade Victor Ojei. Additionally, investing in agencies tasked with public enlightenment, such as the National Orientation Agency, is crucial for disseminating information and fostering a sense of shared responsibility among citizens.

It’s time for politicians like Peter Obi to move beyond rhetoric and offer tangible solutions to the challenges facing Nigeria. President Tinubu and other leaders must be open to constructive criticism and proactive in implementing viable strategies. Let’s heed the call for a “renewed hope” by embracing actionable measures that prioritize the welfare of all Nigerians.
