Lagosians are excited by the Super Eagles’ victory over the Bafana Bafana in a thrilling penalty shootout. The semifinal clash, which ended 1-1 in regulation time and extended into extra time, saw Nigeria clinch victory 4-2 on penalties at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. Thousands watched the encounter at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan cheering the team.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Super Eagles for the victory.  He hailed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for hosting 25 viewing centres and the mega centre at Onikan in Lagos.


Emphasising the remarkable turnout at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Arena, Omotoso noted that it surpassed that of the stadium in Coted’Ivoire, He admired the resilience of Nigeria showcased during the match, attributing the success to the unity and determination of Lagosians and Nigerians alike.

Residents of Lagos have been enjoying the football action at the 25 designated viewing centres established by the Lagos State Government with opportunities to predict scores and win money. Over 20 winners at the Onikan mega viewing centre walked away with a prize of Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000) each for accurately predicting the result of the Nigeria – South Africa duel Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hudeyin, alongside Omotoso, and Director-General of Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu and other top government officials were present at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in onikan, cheering the team, to rally behind the Super Eagles.

The Super Eagles will face the host nation, Cote d’Ivoire, in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, February 11th, at 9:00 PM. Lagosians are expected to turn out in large numbers across all 25 viewing centres and the mega viewing centre to support the Super Eagles.
