Maternal Health: Rotary Club City Valley Donates Free Mosquito Treated Nets, Sanitary Pads
The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt City valley has donated free health kits to pregnant and nursing mothers at the Model Primary Health Care Center Okuru, Abuloma Community in Port Harcourt Local Government area Rivers State,
President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt City Valley Rotarian Captain Paul Ojinta who led members of the club to distribute the free treated anti mosquito sleep nets and sanitary pads to over twenty five pregnant and nursing mothers, said the gesture is part of the mandates of the Rotary International to care for the health of the mother and child, in the month of July.
He said “the essence of our gesture is just to support the development of humanity through various interventions which the Rotary Club is noted for. We believe this gesture will improve mother and child health and put them in better condition mentally”.
For twenty-year-old pregnant Abigail Boma, who is one of the twenty-five beneficiaries, she said it was her first time to receive a free gift since her seven months old pregnancy. This she said has improve her #mentalhealth and has given her #hope that she’s not alone despite been abandoned by the father of her unborn child.
“I’m really excited to receive this free gift from #Rotary I have never received any gift since I realized I was pregnant. Before now I had told my dad that I need a mosquito net because the area we stay is polluted with mosquitoes, I fall ill all the time and its malaria. My dad kept saying “later” because he couldn’t afford one. I couldn’t hold my happiness when I got the bag and found the net inside; I called my dad immediately and told him, he heaved a sigh of relief! I’m sure this will help him mentally and it’s really heart-warming to know. Thank you Rotary!” she sobs.
The Matron of the Model Primary Health Center, Okuru, Mrs Keuphel Igoni while commending the club for choosing the facility, said some pregnant and nursing mothers who couldn’t even afford malaria drugs are excited to freely receive the mosquito nets.
She also said “ this will also give them a relief mentally because some of them earlier were even asking me of the net. This will also encourage them to be visiting the ante-natal clinic because some of them don’t”.
On his part, the club Project Service Chiar, Nomso Ogbuefi said “Rotary makes high-quality health care available to vulnerable mothers and children so they can live longer and grow stronger. We expand access to quality care, so mothers and children everywhere can have the same opportunities for a healthy future”.
