The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem has said that the newly inaugurated Cross River State House of Assembly under his watch will work with the executive arm of government to improve legislation and oversight activities that will better the lives of citizens.

The Honorable Speaker stated this on Friday, during an early morning phone-in program on Correct 97.3FM Calabar, on his maiden question and answer interview post inauguration as Speaker of the 10th Assembly.

During the 30-minute feedback radio program, Ayambem noted that being a two term member of the Assembly has accorded him a mastery of the workings of the legislature with the executive on improving legislation and overall networking with the other organs of government for effective representation.

“I can assure you that the 10th Assembly will be different from the others in terms of presentations, legislation and oversight engagements with the various MDAs.

“Sometimes it is difficult to carry out oversight assignments, because once you have given an MDA a pre-notice of an oversight visit, it becomes a problem for that MDA to open the records. But this time we will work with the executive to carry out comprehensive oversight engagements on the various Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Parastatals”.

Continuing the Speaker said: “You know that our state has been badly affected by the taking of the oil wells and also the ceding of the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon which has badly affected our revenue generation as a State.

“Away from that we will also work on stopping leakages on the state’s revenue, because if that is not properly tackled the state will suffer and this will also cause the workforce and citizens to suffer, putting in mind that our state is largely civil service based”.

On providing access to budget papers for all and sundry, Ayambem noted that “we will work on activating an official website and email for the Assembly to enable citizens to access and review budget documents per sector, per annum from wherever they are with no stress. The budget will be open to the public”.
