Recently, the General Manager, Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI), Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu has appealed to the motoring public and professional drivers to make the safety of lives and property their priority while commuting during this Eid-El-Fitr celebration period and beyond.

Mrs. Afusat stated this in a salah greetings message to Muslim Faithfuls in the State, appealing to drivers to ensure that they do not embark on any journey without servicing their vehicles and to also ensure that they are in good working condition to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and property.

According to her, “Festive seasons are usually attributed to road mishaps due to the high influx of people travelling within and outside the state. Hence, there is a need to sensitise people on the need to ensure safety precautions and drive safely, whether within or outside the state”.

Mrs. Tiamiyu urged Lagosians to be safe during the period, take precautions, have a good attitude and a clear mind while driving, stating that a clear mind while driving reduces risks attached to road hazards.

She, however, admonished motorists to be cautious of bad weather and if possible, avoid embarking on a journey during heavy rainfall and also avoid plying unfamiliar routes.

While giving tips on Safety Precautions during the celebration, the General Manager noted that if it is compulsory to embark on a journey during this period, it is advisable to set out early to avoid driving at night and over-speeding which can lead to road accidents.

She said, “Check the condition of your vehicle before setting out, don’t manage damaged vehicle brake, check and replace your tyre if necessary, make sure you have a fire extinguisher, jerk, spanner and C-caution in your vehicle when embarking on a journey”.

“Also, check the engine oil and water in your vehicle radiator before heading out and buy enough fuel that can take you to your destination successfully. All these are safety precautions that cannot be overlooked”, she stressed.

The LASDRI boss added that safe driving is a shared responsibility between driver and passenger. The driver has his role to perform by not drinking while driving, having enough rest and being in a good state of mind before embarking on any journey. While the passengers must speak up and caution any driver engaging in reckless driving.

She, therefore, encouraged professional drivers to visit any of LASDRI Centres and Annexes for their annual mandatory training in a bid to imbibe safe driving culture.
