Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has cautioned political parties against whipping religious sentiments during campaigns while canvassing for votes from the electorate ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Mr Ganduje made the call on Thursday in Kano while declaring open the fourth National Inter-Religious Conference.

He also urged strict adherence to an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) directive banning political parties from campaigning at religious centres.

The governor lamented the use of religion by political elites, especially during electioneering, to divide religious groups.

He challenged leaders of various faiths to close ranks in mutual understanding and dialogue to promote unity, peace and cohesion.

Mr Ganduje said the conference would promote religious understanding in the society and enhance peace and unity in Nigeria.

NIREC chairman Mohammad Bin-Uthman said religious leaders must tread the path of the dignity of an individual’s faith despite the differences.

Mr Bin-Uthman added that harnessing and celebrating diversity without violating the principle of individual faith is sacrosanct to national development.

The co-chair of the conference, Archbishop of Metropolitan, North Province, Peter Ogunmuyiwa, added that the plurality of faith was a blessing to Nigeria despite the efforts of some elements to capitalise on the differences to create tension.

He called for constant interface and dialogue between Christian leaders and Muslim clergymen for better understanding and harmonious relationships in the country.
