A new survey by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that 133 million Nigerians sank into multidimensional poverty under the Muhammadu Buhari regime.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) examined multiple forms of poverty assessment, including health, living standard, education, security, and unemployment and stated that 63 per cent of Nigerians are socially deprived of at least one of the highlighted components.

The survey was conducted with support and collaboration from National Social Safety-Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).

Giving remarks on the report, the Statistician-General of the Federation, Semiu Adeniran, disclosed that the survey was implemented between 2021 and 2022, spanning 109 senatorial districts across the country.

“The survey was implemented in 2021 to 2022, and it is the largest survey with a sample size of over 56,610 people in 109 senatorial districts in the 36 states of Nigeria,” he said.
