The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has taken the gospel of financial savings to students in secondary schools in Bauchi State to mark this year’s World Savings Day.

The Corporation, while speaking with DAILY POST in Bauchi at the Government Comprehensive Day Secondary School, Bakari Dukku, said that the day, which is celebrated on October 31st, is to sensitise people on the reason to put their money in the bank.

While presenting a paper titled: “Savings prepare you for a better future” the Zonal Controller of NDIC, Ajiya Bah Zarma, urged the young generation to copy the ’20:10:70′ model of saving.

“The model says you save 20 percent of your income, give 10 percent to charity and spend 70 percent on yourself,” he said.

He stated that the NDIC had started the renovation of 21 blocks of classrooms in the school to make the learning environment conducive for students of the school.

“World Savings Day is being celebrated annually all over the world to create awareness on savings and it’s a creation of the Bankers’ Committee.

“We are renovating about 21 classrooms. Before this time, if you saw this school, you would nearly shed tears because the school was dilapidated. However, this is part of our intervention. It’s the little we can do to encourage, particularly female students.

“The reason we brought the programme to this school is because we want to catch them young.

“When you inculcate the habit of saving among children, there are lots of benefits,” she said.
