In Port Harcourt, Rivers state residents have been shocked as an alleged unpaid polytechnic was spotted working as a bus conductor.
A Lecturer at the Capt Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Zoe Tamunotonye has taken to working as a bus attendant to, in his affirmation, make ends meet following non-payment of his salaries for the past six months.
In a trending video footage yesterday in Port Harcourt, Tamunotonye was captured ushering passengers into a Mile 1 route bound yellow bus through busy Ikwerre road, a development he confirmed as true. When he spoke to Vanguard..
Authorities at the polytechnic had withheld the lecturer’s salaries following his refusal to apologise to management among other terms stated in an 11 April 2022 letter conveying to him the report of an investigation indicting him of “misconduct” on alleged harassment of Blessing Audu, a female student of the school.
Tamunotonye on the refusal to abide by the recommendations of the enquiry told Vanguard, “The school failed to define the indictment on misconduct. That is because there was no proven misconduct or harassment.
“I’ve written to them through my lawyer, saying they must withdraw that letter. In any case, assuming without admitting there was harassment, the punishment for such by the school regulations is not apology or suspension. It is dismissal. If they are sure of misconduct, let them dismiss me.
“I will take the rightful it, only if they are able to prove I deserved same, rather than withholding my salaries because I’m still lecturing and doing my job without hindrance in the school. I’m still being assign courses I teach. My position is the school should pay my salaries, go to the media. And clear my name.”
On why he took to bus boy to make ends meet, the embattled lecturer said, “Since salaries have not been coming for the past six months, rather than depending on friends and relatives which is more humiliating, I settled for bus conductor after failing to find better options.
“Even the the bus drivers didn’t want to engage me, knowing my social status, until I met this guy. How much will going home with three to four thousand naira do for me? The relief is that is makes me leave the house and I never knew being bus conductor could be so interesting. You meet people and feel fulfilled helping people to move around.”
