KUJE PRISON TRAGEDY: BUHARI, LAWAN AND CO SHOULD RESIGN – ZIK GBEMRE

What more proof is needed to conclude that Nigeria has sunk deep into a failed state? Which way Nigeria, which way to go (as Sunny Okosun sang) with the recent terrorist onslaught on Abuja.

What excuse is President Mohammadu Buhari giving, that a prison located in Abuja, the nation’s capital, Federal Government, major prison was raided by Boko Haram to free detained fellow terrorists, killing prison guards and others in their escape?

What is Buhari waiting for to sack all armed service chiefs and heads of security agencies in the country with all their GOCs and military commanding officers?

With such a raid carried out successfully with impunity in the seat of power, where is considered safe in this country? The other day it was President Buhari’s advance convoy that was attacked. Some security details lost their lives in that ordeal in Katsina, the home state of Buhari.

Before that, it was a train crew, and passengers were attacked and passengers were taken hostage, many yet to regain freedom. No one is safe in this country anymore.

Who will protect who, when security operatives, military barracks, Nigeria Defense Academy, police stations, and prisons have turned into easy targets for terrorists who are killing and destroying at random?

No one placed a gun on Buhari to seek to be elected or no one forced Buhari to seek power. I think President Buhari should stop the blame games and come open to say that he has failed to govern Nigeria. Every day we read of attacks.

It is glaring that the President is grossly incompetent, and has no solution to Nigeria’s problems, more because he also has not condemned attacks by Fulani herdsmen across the country.

It is also disheartening to hear the National Assembly through Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, joining in passing the blame. What did Lawan mean when he said “our security system has failed” the country? Sheer self-mockery.

Lawan knows he is deliberately begging the question. And that cannot exonerate him and the nation’s legislature which he controls from sharing the blame for the failed state we now have under their leadership.

The right thing for Lawan to say specifically is that the Buhari administration which includes the NASS has failed the country. And together with Buhari, the administration needs to pack and go. Simple as that.

The real statement Nigerians needed Lawan to make over the Kuje attack is not “our security system has failed”. He should clearly say, “Apologies fellow Nigerians. As a government, we have failed but we appeal to you to bear with us till May 29, 2023, so we can elect a responsive government”

Inside Abuja where the Kuje Prisons is located in the office of the Ministry of Defense Headquarters, housing all service chiefs, and all heads of security agencies. Inside Abuja is the office of the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, yet terrorists could invade Kuje Prison in the same Abuja, kill correctional officers, and set free fellow terrorists without meaningful counterattack.

The Kuje facility and others alike are correctional centers. I call them prisons, not correctional centers. Nigeria has no correction centers because suspects and criminals get into them, and no sign of a correction. The conditions in the prison make those incarcerated more criminal than they were before they get in.

It is difficult to believe that the military and security operatives don’t have hand in this raid of Kuje Prison. It is difficult to believe the cock and bull story that for over two hours no response team came from security operatives after they left.

The pertinent question is, where the attackers escaped to since it was reported that they were many.
