Osimhen scored four times as Nigeria defeated The Falcons of Sao Tome 10-0 in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers in Agadir, Monday. It could have been five had the striker chosen to take up his spot-kick duties, instead, he allowed Emmanuel Dennis to score his first international goal from the spot.
A top member of the backroom staff who pleaded anonymity revealed to 234sportsng.com that Osimhen was rated as the best penalty taker in the team after each player was given the opportunity to score from the spot in training, hence the decision by Peseiro to hand over penalty duties to the Napoli striker.
“After several trainings, we did lots of work on penalties in our quest to pick the penalty taker in the team. Peseiro was eager to establish that, but Osimhen turned out to be the best in the team after he converted all his kicks,” he said.
Peseiro confirmed his choice in one of his post-match interviews when he showered encomium on Osimhen for passing the responsibility to Emmanuel Dennis against Sao Tome.
“I appointed Victor Osimhen as our designated penalty taker and yesterday( Monday), he allowed Dennis to score his first international goal from the spot. Quality of a leader,” Peseiro said.
