ZIK GBEMRE FROWNS AT THE FACTS ON NEW LAW SCHOOL CAMPUSES: NASS HYPOCRISY & GULLIBLE CHEERING CROWD

It’s obvious the Nigerian Senate, indeed the National Assembly (NASS) does not know its duties, or deliberately acting not to know.
There is only one Nigerian Law School (NLS), already established by Law, under the regulation of the Council for Legal Education (CLE).

That way, approving and setting up a law school are executive functions, not of legislative drama and exuberance.

Can lawmakers play a role in setting up a Law School campus? Yes, by way of lobbying or influencing the Executive, but certainly not in this grandstanding the Senate is engaged in to, of course, make the public feel they’re important in creating a Law School Campus.

The Executive does not need legislative approval to build another Campus of the Law School. That has already been proven the Governor Nyesom Wike effect.

The Governor Wike effect indicates that a state, desirous of a Law School Campus gets one once the requesting state can guarantee funding to build the structures and deliver to the federal government. It’s as simple as that, with no legislative debate or approval.

Wike asked the Council of Legal Education for a Port Harcourt Campus of the Nigerian Law School(NLS). He got approval in less than two weeks. The visit of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary to Rivers after the Executive approval has well been given was a legislative exuberance by the lawmaker to act like their input mattered.

As if we speak, the Port Harcourt Law School has reached an advanced stage in construction, promising to be the best and here in the Senate, celebrating inconsequential approval to have new NLS campuses. It will take ages before we start seeing the new Senate approved campuses.

It is unfortunate that even supposed informed persons don’t realise this fact and keep cheering the hypocritical NASS as if anyone needs them to set up a new Law School Campus.
