CITATION
Dr Joyce Ogho Ogwezi (Nee Ogbodu) was born on Saturday, 28 September, 1957 into a polygamous family, where the education of the girl-child was quite competitive. Thus, for the young Joyce, attending primary school was a mirage.
Her fighting spirit was made manifest at this tender age, when she fought and compelled her mother, a petty trader at the time, to send her to school against all odds. But for divine intervention, her doggedness and sheer resilience, little Joyce would not have seen the four walls of a primary school. She completed her primary and secondary education at the Immaculate Conception Convent School I (Now Ojojo Primary School) Warri, Delta State from 1962-1968 and Chude’s Girls Secondary School, Sapele, Delta State from 1969-1973 respectively.
As a result of her love for schooling and her innate desire to pursue her education further, Joyce taught briefly for about a year (1973-1974) at Caveginia Primary School, Warri, Delta State before proceeding to the then College of Education, Abraka, where she trained as a professional teacher and got awarded with the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in 1978.
She had her compulsory National Youth Service Corp scheme as a teacher at the Immaculate Girls’ Secondary School, Itak, Akwa Ibom State between 1978 and 1979. After her national service, Joyce resumed her teaching career at the famous Nana College, Warri, Delta State for another one year (1979-1980). Her pursuit for further education took her to the University of Benin, Benin City, in the former Bendel State, where she bagged a Bachelor of Education (Arts) English degree with a Second Class (Honours) Upper Division in 1983.
Joyce, who can easily be described as a born-teacher returned to the classroom after her degree programme as a Principal Lecturer and Head, Department of General English, College of Education, Warri, Delta State from October, 1983-February, 1992. As one of the best graduating students of English, Joyce kept reminding herself that she just could not betray the huge confidence, which the University of Benin had bestowed on her by awarding her a solid Second Class Upper degree in 1983. This became her driving force and has remained her energising tonic for becoming one of the best.
In 1988, Joyce took advantage of the only staff development programme available then – Work Study Programme to pursue graduate studies in the famous and prestigious University of Ibadan, Ibadan. Joyce did so well in her Master’s programme that her overall aggregate score of over 80 percent is a record that is yet to be equalled in the Department. Having bagged her M.A degree in 1989, she immediately registered for her Doctoral programme that same year.
Joyce was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Communication in 1992 by the prestigious premier University of Ibadan, Ibadan in the yet-to-be-equalled record time of two and half years. Everyone who knew her in Ibadan attributed this rare academic and scholarly feat to the strong foundation of hard work, love for knowledge, excellence and sheer tenacity, which had been ignited in the younger Joyce in the early 80s.
After being awarded her Ph.D in 1992, Dr. Joyce Ogwezi went back to where she loves working most, the classroom; to continue her God given task of moulding human character and influencing the younger generation. But, this time, she got appointed as a Senior Lecturer and pioneer Head, Department of Mass Communication, Delta State University, Abraka in 1992. She brought her newly-acquired knowledge, skills and experience to bear on this Department, which has graduated several young men and women over the past two and a half decades.
Apart from academic trainings which she received, Dr. Joyce Ogwezi has equally participated in several professional training programmes with certifications and accreditations. These include Peace and Conflict Impact Assessments, by the PPT Peace building Centre, Ottawa, Canada (2006); Problem Solving and Decision Making by the Lagos Business School (LBS), Pan-African University, Lagos (2006); Development Planning and Management Course by IMA International, United Kingdom and South Africa (2006); Women and Peace Building at the Summer Peace building Institute (SPI) of the Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA, 2004); Globalisation, Conflict and Peace Building, also at the Summer Peace building Institute (SPI) of the Eastern Mennonite University Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA, (2004); Enhanced Contract Management Course (Module II) for Contract Holders by Mak Mera Nigeria Limited, Lagos, (2003); Preventive Peace building Workshop by West Africa Network for Peace building (WANEP) in Effurun, (2002); Impact Assessment Training-Practitioners’ Course organised by AMEC in collaboration with SPDC in Warri, (2002); Fundamentals of Safety Training Course organised by APEC’s Council Development Corporation in (2002) and Hearts and Minds Behavioural-Based Safety Training Workshop organised by the VIGEO/WORKSAFE International, USA and Canada in Benin-City, (2002).
There is no gainsaying the fact that Dr. Ogwezi has over the years, demonstrated continuous professional excellence, proven leadership and management abilities, excellent team building and communication skills and strong cross-cultural and interpersonal skills. She is a Media Consultant, Sustainability Livelihoods, Community Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Expert with over 30 years’ experience working in close collaboration with rural communities and international development organisations.
Dr. Joyce Ogwezi is the current Head of Department of Mass Communication, Delta State University, Abraka. She had earlier served in that capacity at the pioneering stages of the institution about thirty years’ ago. She returned to join other academics to develop the Department in line with global best practices.
Dr. Joyce is happily married to Rev. (Dr.) Augustine Ossai Ogwezi (Presiding Bishop of Abundant Life Christian Centre, Lagos) and is blessed with a miracle daughter, Michelle Chiyenum Oghenekevwe.
