The Lagos State Government on Tuesday commenced the Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum for the preparation of the Year 2026 Budget with the first session held in the Ikeja Division at the Multipurpose Hall of Radio Lagos, Agidingbi.

The exercise will subsequently move across the other four divisions of the State – Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe (IBILE).

This annual forum is a critical part of the budget cycle, as it provides a platform for residents to make contributions that guide how public resources are allocated to address community needs, drive growth, improve service delivery, and make Lagos a more livable and inclusive State.

Speaking on the significance of the exercise at the opening session of the five-day event, Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Ope George said: “This forum is not just about numbers; it is about aligning our spending with the real priorities of Lagosians. By hearing directly from the people, we ensure that the Y2026 Budget reflects citizens’ voices and lived realities, not just government assumptions.”

In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Mrs. Olayinka Ojo expressed appreciation to stakeholders for their continuous participation in the forum.

“On behalf of the Lagos State Government, I wish to extend our deep appreciation to all our distinguished guests who, despite their many commitments, graciously made time to honour our invitation. Over the years, your active participation has provided valuable insights that shape our developmental agenda, set clear pathways for sustainable growth, and strengthen our resolve to build a Lagos that works for all,” she said.

Mrs. Ojo emphasised that the forum embodies the inclusivity of the Sanwo-Olu administration, guided by the principle that “No One Must Be Left Behind” irrespective of age, gender, or social standing.

She encouraged Lagosians to continue fulfilling their civic obligations, particularly the prompt payment of taxes, which remain vital for delivering equitable and sustainable development across the state.

The forum featured inputs from traditional rulers and community leaders, reflecting grassroots perspectives on pressing issues, Baale of Mulero in Agege, High Chief Olaitan Opeifa, called on the Government to consider introducing a monthly incentive scheme similar to that of Katsina State, where citizens receive ₦5,000. He suggested that Lagos could begin piloting such a policy in the Mulero community.

In the same vein, Chief Daniel Ajibose highlighted the poor state of drainage in the Olota area, which becomes unbearable during the rainy season and urged government intervention. He also raised concerns over the rising level of youth involvement in drug abuse and advised the implementation of empowerment policies to address the challenge.

The forum highlighted updates on the government’s projects and programmes, such as the half-year performance of the Y2025 Budget, plans for the remainder of Y2025, and focus areas for 2026.

The State Government reaffirmed its commitment to an inclusive governance agenda (THEMES Plus), emphasising gender equality, social inclusion, and youth engagement.
