Ogonokom, Abua LGA – The atmosphere at Government Comprehensive Secondary School, Ogonokom, was filled with excitement as the Obiga Mathematics Foundation, led by its founder, Mr. Obiga David Kenneth, and his wife, Engr. Ndidi Obiga, inaugurated the school’s Science Club and the Literacy and Drama Society of Ogonokom (LIDRAMS).

The landmark event also featured the donation of complete sets of science and arts textbooks including exercise books to both junior and senior students — an intervention teachers say will revolutionize learning in the school.

In his remarks, Mr. Kenneth described the project as a return to his roots.

“When I was young, there was a vibrant Literacy and Dramatic Society here,” he said. “Plays like “Isiburu” by renowned literary icon Elechi Amadi shaped my outlook. Over the years, that culture faded. Like Nehemiah in the Bible, we felt called to come back and rebuild the broken walls — one brick at a time.”

The ceremony attracted special guests, including members of the National Union of Abua Students (NUAS), and representatives of ABOLGA Youths. The highlight came when the National President of NUAS presented an award of recognition to Kenneth for his visionary initiative in promoting education and youth development.

Vice Principal (Academics, UBE) Mr. Ikilighi Odekulo said the donation would have an immediate impact on academic performance on both students and teachers.

“Sometimes when we ask students to do assignments, they say they don’t have textbooks. Now there will be no excuses. Even if they don’t own one personally, they can borrow from a friend. Teaching will be much easier for us.”

Principal Mr. David Black Wagbara described the gesture as “a 100% boost” for the school.

“We have been waiting for this. The science students have all the books they need now, and so do the arts students. From today, there is no reason why any student should fail to complete their assignments.”

Science teacher Mr. John Yanani noted that the textbooks would be crucial for tackling challenging subjects.

“These books will help students grasp difficult topics in physics, chemistry, and mathematics, and encourage them to go beyond the classroom. For those preparing for competitions, this is a game changer.”

For the students, the donations brought a renewed sense of possibility. An SS2 science student, said:

“Before now, I used to borrow notes because I didn’t have textbooks. Sometimes I couldn’t do my assignments at all. Now I can study anytime. This makes me believe my dream of becoming an engineer can come true.”

An SS3 arts student and member of LIDRAMS, said:

“I love acting, but we never had the right books to prepare scripts. Now we can perform real plays from our literature texts and even compete outside Ogonokom. This makes me proud to be a student here.”

Under the new initiative, the Science Club will host annual science debates, while LIDRAMS will stage drama performances and debates at local, state, and potentially national levels. The Foundation will hold quarterly meetings with the students to monitor progress and offer continued support.

Kenneth closed the event with a call to action for community involvement:

“This is our country, our state, our local government, and our community. We are the ones who make the difference — one brick at a time.”
