In a major step to position Lagos as a premier global tourism destination, the State Government is seeking a strategic partnership with CNN to elevate its tourism profile on the international stage.
The Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, recently met with CNN’s Richard Quest and Zara Driss on the sides at the World Travel Market in London to discuss this collaboration, aimed at showcasing Lagos’ unique cultural heritage, dynamic arts scene, and diverse attractions to a global audience.
This partnership will leverage CNN’s international platform to highlight the rich experiences Lagos offers, from its thriving creative sector to its cultural and historical landmarks. This initiative aligns with the Lagos State Government’s broader mission to boost Lagos’ visibility as a destination of choice for global tourists and further supports Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of making Lagos a leading tourism hub.
Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka expressed her optimism about the impact of the collaboration, saying “Through this partnership with CNN, we aim to bring Lagos’ story to the world, showcasing the vibrant culture, iconic sites, and the unique experiences that define our city. This collaboration is another significant step toward realising our vision for Lagos as a global destination for culture, tourism, and innovation”.
In recent months, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture has spearheaded a series of initiatives to strengthen Lagos’ appeal. Projects such as the ongoing development and enhancements to key heritage sites have been central to creating an enriched tourism experience that honours the city’s rich historical roots. The state’s signature cultural events, including the recent Afropolis Lagos and Yoruba Heritage Week, among others, have provided platforms for showcasing Lagos’ distinctive identity and have attracted both regional and international audiences.
The Ministry has also been actively building partnerships with private stakeholders to broaden the range of tourism offerings and deliver memorable experiences for visitors. This new partnership with CNN exemplifies Lagos State’s commitment to working with global media outlets to promote its tourism potential, further supported by recent documentation of all sites on Wikimedia that strategically target international audiences. The collaboration with CNN will bring Lagos’ unique attractions and stories to the forefront, reaching audiences across continents.
This latest development underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to advancing its tourism sector, fostering economic growth, and creating new opportunities for its residents. Through the partnership, Lagos is poised to achieve greater visibility and recognition as a vibrant, world-class destination.
