Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has said that his administration will not play politics with the education sector as it is the foundation for any development.
Acknowledging the depth of experience and competence of members of the two inaugurated boards, Governor Fubara noted that at this point in time it is important to get certain things right and education is one area the government should not make mistakes to build a foundation for a better Rivers State.
Governor Fubara stated this while inaugurating members of the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board and the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board at the Executive Council Chamber, Government House, Port Harcourt on Friday.
“I have been very patient on carrying out this assignment because I know the importance of these two Boards, especially the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board. Because it is the foundation of educational development of everyone. You cannot get it right if you make mistakes from the SUBEB.”
The governor charged the Chairman and members of the Universal Basic Education Board to ensure that they maintain the already established standard as he will not tolerate anything less, but rather urged them to improve on the system for a better result.
“For the SUBEB I know that there is a standard that is already set. The immediate past Chairmen did his best, he may not be right in everything, but I know that there is a high level of discipline in that section of our educational system.”
He also charged the Senior Secondary Schools Board to urgently commence the promotion exercise for teachers in that section to enable them to have their due benefits like other civil servants.
“Please we need to do that immediately. That should be your first assignment from next week so that we can make those sets of workers happy too.”
Inaugurating the Board members, Governor Fubara stated that the appointees were among the few lucky Rivers people and believes strongly that they will acquit themselves creditably with all sense of commitment to the assignment given to them by the State Government, adding that he is so passionate about education as it forms the focus of his 2025 programmes.
“It is important to me, when it comes to the issue of education, you know how passionate I am. I have told you that my concern next year is education, health and agriculture.”
He emphasised that the inauguration of the Boards marks the beginning of the 2025 programme for the good people of Rivers State and expressed confidence that it will be achieved with the support of the people, assuring of his administration’s support to ensure the success of the Boards.
